RoHS and WEEE

This is the RoHS and WEEE Online Support Centre for New Zealand sponsored by the New Zealand Government through New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
 
The aim of this website is to centralize resources and support for the New Zealand Electronics and associated supply industries that are affected by these legislations. The scope is not confined to the EU legislations but covers the China RoHS and other countries as RoHS and WEEE type legislations spread across the globe.
 
There is a plethora of information on the Web and this website attempts to provide the best of breed to ensure that the information is credible and does not overlead the user. Information is sourced from reliable sources such as the European Commission Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) who have been very supportive for RoHS issues.
 
The content of this site has been supplied and managed by RoHS-International Ltd. As from 31 June 2007 this RoHS and WEEE site will be no longer updated, however we have endevoured to future-proof the site as much as possible by linking through to sites that are continuing to be updated.

This website endeavors to cover all aspects of RoHS and WEEE from a practical implementation perspective from a New Zealand standpoint. As this standpoint does not differ substantially from any exporter to the EU the information is relevant globally.  It  aims to address the imbalance of web based support between the huge amount of resources available for lead-free and the scant resources for Cr6, Cadmium, Mercury and BDE replacements. Project infrastructure, material logistics, legislative interpretations, exemptions are also covered. Last but not least is the email forum where any questions posted are responded to once per week.  You do not need to be a member of Electronics South to post questions or to use any of the resources offered on this website. Contribution is made from a number of different New Zealand and overseas companies and feedback is always appreciated.

So, what is RoHS and WEEE all about? It is all about the growing volume of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)  graphically illustrated by the Royal School of Art sculpture of the WEEE Man which represents the waste electrical and electronic equipment generated by one person born in 2005. Multiple this by 60 Million and you have the landfill space needed for the UK alone for WEEE in the next 75 years. To combat this the EU are forcing recycling of WEEE through legislation - the WEEE Directive. In recognition that not all WEEE will be recycled the Restriction of use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive prevents the use of certain elements and their compounds that could cause toxicity in their disposal or decomposition paths.
